Institute for Scientific Methodology

ISEM (Institute for Scientific Methodology) starts out as a place for the critical thinking and training on the communication and production processes in contemporary science.

Its aim is to develop an inter/trans-disciplinary systemic approach in order to relieve the scientific production process of a pyramidal, linear and strict conception so recovering and fully enhancing the role of researcher as dynamical maker and manager of cultural models. So the methodological question is directly connected to the social and cultural role of the scientific enterprise and to the need of globally evaluating the value and the impact of the chosen models.

The necessity for science training and the constant feedback with the political and social realities which nourish science naturally lead to a renewed need for scientific communication, no more the rhetorical divulgation model, but one founded on the requirements of critical and pertinent information about the research’s hot topics and their social impact at long and medium term.

Training - Master “Paul K. Feyerabend”

ISEM will run the annual “Paul K. Feyerabend”Master in Scientific Research Methodology for internationally selected graduates and researchers in Science.

The courses will be held near Palermo, in Bagheria, in the outstanding Villa Cattolica, where the permanent “Guttuso” museum is hosted.

The Master lasts six months, from January to June. The lessons will be held in English by Professors selected among the best international researchers.

Meetings “Focus”

ISEM will also run the courses and meetings “Focus” on the hot topics of scientific research, both on theoretical subjects involving themes of great impact (such as unifies theories, genomics, mind theories) and the technology-related ones, especially the inter-disciplinary areas (new materials, bio-information, nanotechnologies, quantum computing, information technology).

Research

Along with the educational activity, the Institute will lead frontier-research in chemistry and theoretical physics.

In chemistry, the versatility which has marked, in the last five years, the Mario Pagliaro CNR Laboratory in Palermo as one of the most important research team for their wide-spanning contributions (from catalysis to sensoristics, from science of materials to renewable substances, from photo-chemistry to synthesis) in collaboration with 11 different countries.

In theoretical physics, under the guidance of Ignazio Licata Full Professor of Theoretical Physics at Palm Harbor, USA and IxtuCyber for Complex Systems, recently back in Sicily, mathematical models in theoretical biology and cognitive epistemology. The chosen areas will be the strongly interdisciplinary ones: bio and quantum computing, nanotechnologies, symbolic and sub-symbolic systems for knowledge representation, quantum systemics.
